So what do we need to do to sell tobacco products legally?
Is it a tobacco product?
Loose tobacco/roll your own tobacco, cigarettes, cigars, cigarette papers and filters can only be sold to people 18 and over.
Show Me I.D.
Our policy states Show Me I .D.- Be Age Ok. Always ask anyone who looks or could be under 18 for ID.
Ask For ID.
Ask to see valid ID and check both the photograph and the customer’s date of birth.
No ID?
If no ID, politely refuse the sale and follow the refusal procedures. This will help to prove that you understand your responsibilities and may prevent you being prosecuted if you fail a test purchase in the future.
Valid ID?
If valid ID provided, complete the sale.
HSE Environmental Health Officers
The Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) do use test purchasers who are underage youngsters between 14- 17 years old.
If you are found guilty of breaking the law you could be fined up to 3,000 Euros, lose your registration with the National Tobacco Control Office for up to 3 months and
even face up to 3 months imprisonment.
Don't risk your job - just ask their age and for proof of ID.
