She says she’s 21, but you’re not sure she’s over 18.
It is a crime to sell alcohol to anyone under 18.
It’s up to you to ensure this law is upheld.
Our policy states Show Me I.D. – Be Age Ok.
Always ask anyone who looks or could be under 18 for valid photo ID.
As you aren’t sure, it would be appropriate. She shows a Garda Age Card proving she’s 21.
If you doubt a customer’s age you should always ask for ID.
All acceptable forms of ID must have a photo and date of birth.
These are ok:
- Driving licence – ONLY if it’s a photocard – check the date of birth.
- Passport – but check the photo and the date of birth.
- The Garda Age Card – but check the photo and date of birth.

The Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) do use test purchasers, who are minors between 14-17 years old.
Be careful, test purchasers may not answer truthfully about their age when challenged, just like underage purchasers so always act lawfully.
